Outdoor Weddings During the Rainy Season

July is here, and with it comes the question that couples dreaming of an outdoor wedding ask themselves every year: What if it rains? At Mogly Studio, we’ve covered enough weddings during the rainy season to know firsthand: a good plan turns the weather into an ally, not an obstacle. Here’s how to plan your outdoor wedding during the rainy season without letting the forecast ruin your peace of mind.

Is there really any reason to fear the rain?

The short answer is no. Seasonal rain in Mexico usually falls in the afternoon and is short-lived, leaving mornings and early afternoons clear most days. Plus, cloudy skies soften the sunlight and prevent harsh midday shadows—something that’s highly appreciated in wedding photography. That soft light, combined with the golden hues left by the clouds after a shower, is pure gold for any wedding photographer or videographer.

Choose your schedule strategically

During the rainy season, the key is your schedule. Plan the ceremony and most of the photo shoot before 4 or 5 p.m., which is when rainfall tends to be heaviest in much of the country. If your reception is in the evening, consider moving the toasts or the cake-cutting indoors as part of your itinerary, rather than having to improvise if it starts to rain.

Have a backup venue plan without losing the spirit of the event

Every outdoor venue needs a trick up its sleeve: a clear tent, a garden with a pergola, a covered terrace, or an adjoining room that maintains the same atmosphere. Ideally, you should visit the venue and ask directly about its rain plan, and make sure that Plan B feels like an extension of the original design rather than a last-minute, improvised change.

Weather-Resistant Details

Think about small touches that enhance your guests’ experience: non-slip mats or walkways, umbrellas or parasols that match the color scheme at the entrance, and a coat check nearby in case anyone needs to leave a jacket. For the decor, prioritize flowers and materials that won’t be damaged by moisture, and avoid paper or cardboard items left out in the open.

It’s also a good idea to let your vendors know in advance. The audio, lighting, and—of course—photo and video teams need to know if there’s a possibility of moving part of the setup indoors. A good wedding photographer or videographer already brings weather-resistant equipment and knows how to adjust their shooting angles when the setting changes from an open garden to a tent, so don’t hesitate to ask about this during your first planning meeting.

Rain is also part of the story

Some of the most heartfelt weddings we’ve photographed at Mogly Studio have included brief showers: shared umbrellas, laughter under a makeshift shelter, reflections on the wet ground that turn into cinematic shots. If the weather throws a wrench in your plans, don’t see it as a setback. In video especially, those spontaneous moments are often the ones couples remember most when they watch their wedding film months later.

Planning an outdoor wedding during the rainy season in Mexico isn’t about avoiding the rain at all costs, but rather about planning flexibly so that, rain or shine, the full story is told. At Mogly Studio, we guide couples from the planning phase through to the final delivery, ensuring that every detail—including the weather—is captured to their advantage.
